BC Parks, the Kitasoo/Xai’xais Nation and the Gitga'at Nation (the planning team) are in the process of developing a Management Plan for the K’ootz/Khutze Conservancy.
Conservancies have been set aside for: the protection and maintenance of their biological diversity and natural environments; the preservation and maintenance of social, ceremonial and cultural values of First Nations; the protection and maintenance of their recreational values; and, development or use of natural resources in a manner consistent with the purposes of those listed above. The K’ootz/Khutze Conservancy was established in 2006 following recommendations from the Central Coast Land and Resource Management Plan. All Conservancies are to be managed through the guidance of a Management Plan and BC Parks, Kitasoo/Xai’xais Nation and Gitga'at Nation are collaboratively developing the plan for the K’ootz/Khutze Conservancy.
The Management Plan for the K’ootz/Khutze Conservancy will have a strong focus on wildlife viewing and cultural value protection and will provide direction on levels of acceptable use, appropriate zoning framework, standards for commercial and public wildlife viewing, and designate temporal and spatial refugia.
The K’ootz/Khutze Conservancy is located along the waterway known as the Inside Passage and receives regular visitation from public and commercial operators intending to view wildlife in a natural setting. Grizzly Bears and their habitats and First Nations' cultural values have been brought forward as the main values of concern for potential impacts from visitation if management direction is not delivered in this area. Research activities that took place in 2020, 2021, and 2022 will provide additional insights to the management principles considered for the conservancy.
The planning team is currently seeking input from stakeholders pertaining to management planning priorities within the K’ootz/Khutze Conservancy and your feed back is important to help set the objectives for management of the area.

Any personal information provided will be removed by BC Parks or Bang the Table moderators, and will not be used. The intent of this questionnaire is to develop a management plan for the K’ootz/Khutze Conservancy with the focus on the primary recreational activity of wildlife viewing and other activities that may benefit that activity, or conflict with it.
The planning team greatly appreciates your time for filling in the questionnaire to assist in developing the long-term vision for the area and we look forward to receiving your feed back. Your answers will help draft the management plan, which will be made available for public review.
