Spring 2025 Update

Tribune Bay Park Recreation Enhancements Project Update – Spring 2025

In 2021, BC Parks acquired two properties to expand Tribune Bay Park on Hornby Island. Since then, BC Parks has been creating a long-term plan for the new park areas, as well as improvements to the existing park. The expanded park will protect additional lands and offer opportunities to enhance natural, cultural, and recreational values at the park.

BC Parks is excited to welcome campers back to Tribune Bay Campground this spring. As of October 1, 2024, the campground was designated a provincial park, which means all regulations of the Park Act apply. Since last season, we have installed a new septic system and made improvements to the campground road.

While there won’t be many visible changes for the 2025 camping season, more improvements are coming, and the campground will look different in summer 2026. Here’s what is underway:

New Layout and Camping Options

To better align with the experience visitors, expect from BC Parks, a complete redesign of the current campground is underway. New sites will include a variety of camping options and sizes, including pull-through sites (for vehicles and campervans), and small, basic cabins. A variety of electrified and non-electrified sites will be offered, as well as new pit toilets and a new shower building.

Reduced Campsite Density

To implement the planned changes, BC Parks is proceeding with a phased approach to construction, starting with the existing campground. In summer 2026, there will be a short-term, temporary reduction of approximately 40 campsites in the park due to a complete redesign and reconstruction of the existing campground. The re-built campground will include more space and privacy between sites in the same footprint. As the project moves forward, BC Parks is committed to providing a similar number of campsites as originally existed in the park and is currently exploring locations within the park to build the remaining ~40 campsites as part of phase 2 of the project (fall/winter 2026/27).

Enhancing Visitors’ Experience

Other changes are being made to enhance visitors’ experience at Tribune Bay Park, including improved access from the campground to the beach, a new playground, and accessibility improvements such as compact gravel campsites and roads, and universally accessible showers. The campground will also prohibit wood-burning campfires, which will provide healthier air for visitors and a lower risk of wildfires. Propane fires are allowed. To align with BC Parks policy, there will also be an extra vehicle fee for second vehicles at a campsite, if the site chosen has space.

Plans Beyond Summer 2026

The location for the remaining ~40 campsites is being explored. These campsites will be built in a different area of the park to ensure there is enough space to provide the experience people expect in our campgrounds. Details will be shared as they are available. Project Description:

In 2021, BC Parks acquired two properties to expand Tribune Bay Park on Hornby Island. Since then, BC Parks has been creating a long-term plan for the new park areas, as well as improvements to the existing park. The expanded park will protect additional lands and offer opportunities to enhance natural, cultural, and recreational values at the park.

The park improvements include:

  • A similar overall number of campsites as previously offered with a reduced density of campsites in the existing campground by developing additional sites in other areas of the park where development is consistent with other park values; and,
  • Enhancing the park's existing facilities for an improved visitor experience, including accessibility and day-use upgrades.

Planning has included a focus on topics such as:

  • Understanding ecological values on the site and how to protect these values using best management practices, as well as enhancing ecological values through invasive plant management and planting native species;
  • Providing outdoor recreation opportunities for British Columbians of all ages and abilities;
  • Understanding the land and Indigenous history; and
  • Supporting sustainable tourism opportunities.

There has been consultation with First Nations and engagement with the public and stakeholders throughout the process.

Building on the information gathered through professional site assessments as well as conversations with the community, BC Parks has prepared a design for park improvements that includes:

  • Understanding and protecting sensitive ecological values including wetlands and watercourses;
  • Preserving areas with mature tree cover where possible;
  • Upgrading trails to enhance access to the shoreline and protect ecological and cultural values;
  • Redesigning entry points to the park to reduce congestion; and,
  • Providing a range of campsite options including walk-in sites, vehicle campsites and bunkies (sleeping shelters), while keeping the overall number of sites the same.
